Probably the best video on pumping a wing on YouTube. Thank you!

Hello! Thanks for this tutorial. Is the “body contraction” you describe when initiating the downward pull on the wing supposed to feel like if you are “pulling yourself up” into the wing? As in your body is contracting but not putting weight on the board?
-
Outstandingly thorough, clear, didactic and well presented! After 42ys in other watersports, I'm a beginner wingfoiler, and I hardly can wait trying a more efficient pumping with your explanation!
-
please, record with higher frame rate if you want to show slow motion.
-
Best explanation I have found on the net. Thanks!
-
With High aspect front wings it's the same movement?
-
Fantastic explanation...i had seen this video but the First time i have not correctly understood the importance of make the board more light when you track the Wing on you and a fraction of second After start the body work ahead when the board Is again light on the water....thanks a lot
-
Great video . Greetings from a beginner in Dakhla now ! I appreciate your effort and hard work !
-
as always, the most thorough and get to point tutorial
-
Thanks for the amazing tutorial, i have a question. Which setup are yo using at red board?
Hi, thanks very much. That's a 125L fanatic board, with a 2000cm2 front wing. Fanatic is now duotone, and their sky free is the next step from this board.
-
I'm trying to get this but I keep having the foil stalling pitching the front of the board up
-
Excellent tutorials , very clear and really helping me learn in memorable chunks. Thankyou so much.
You're welcome Adrian, I'm glad to hear my tutorials are helping you. All the best, Alex.

These are insanely awesome tutorials. Well done! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the great tutorial! Great tips. I've heard from other "experts" that it's best to only pull in the back arm, not both at once, keeping the front arm relatively stable. Will that work or is that contraproductive? Cheers. Marty.
Hi Marty, the idea is that you're pulling the entire wing towards you to increase the apparent wind across the whole wing, so it really is a case of pulling with both arms. If you just moved the back arm you wouldn't be doing much to the apparent wind, you would be changing the hand wing's angle of attack instead. Hopefully you already have the AOA about right before pumping the wing with both arms. Best of luck improving your pumping. All the best, Alex
@kitesurfcollege Thanks Alex, that's made it pretty clear. I'm at that point now where I csn pump on the gusts and the board is kinda itching to get up on the foil. Needs a tad more wind maybe and more core control to keep the board from slewing around all over the place. I'm not giving up!

These videos are amazing. Super clear and in depth - I'm finally starting to understand some of yhe more nuanced details of the wing foil take off. Thank you!

Brilliant Tutorial, best on Youtube, wishing you all the success!!
-
Thank you for the detailed graphics and video angles to help understand both the wing pumping and board pumping!! Very helpful!!
-
I really get a good feeling about trying this technique on my next lesson… thank you

Perfect

Very nice series on how to wingfoil. Interesting how the techniques seem to borrow things from several other board sports. Pumping the foil kind of reminds me of an ollie in skateboarding, while the rest all makes sense from my windsurfing background. Very excited to try wing foiling once I get the chance!

Congratulations, It is the best tutorial. After seeing it I can now pump. Thanks a lot It, is very very goog!!!
-
it is usual to be a little "stuck" to pump right in opposite stance? i'm regular, but riding goofy i'm sooo terrible 😂😂
-
Excellent explanation and build up exercises. This gives me a lot of hope! Thank you very much!
-
The visualization with the orange line showing the pump movement makes it very clear. Thanks!

the best video tutorials for kite / wing!!!! we love you!!

This is an unbelievable tutorial. I'm 4 sessions in, and starting to come up on foil. The clarity this video provides in terms of getting the timing right is like no other video has ever explained - I now deeply understand how to coordinate the arms and the legs for a successful pump. I was witnessing the more experienced riders getting up on foil quite easily on a 10-12knot day, whereas I couldn't progress past just taxi-ing. Can't wait to try this tip out, first on land then on the board. Thanks for what you do!
I was brute forcing myself onto the foil with 20kn wind today without any pumps. I could have just gone kite surfing😂
-
The best explanation I've seen so far, and I've watched quite a lot of them.

I always come back to these tutorials, there are no tutorials as clear and professional as these! Thanks! <3

Best wing tutorial video!!!
-
All great videos! Started kitesurfing with you and now starting wing. Can I ask where you live? Looks beautiful
Thanks very much. I live in Noordhoek near Cape Town. The videos aren't shot here though, as the ocean is too rough to get clear footage. We travel to the Breede river to shoot - and sometime to Langebaan. So most recent vides are at those locations.

Hi! thank so much for this video. I have been trying to get on foil with f one rocket air 7'11 x 31, 2200 foil and 8 m wing without success in 8-14 knot. that is the usual wind in my area. Please, I would love to hear your comments about my next board thinking the most efficient aboard for light wind. I,m 105 kg 1.97 cm tall / 230 lb 6'5 tall. I have 3 boards in mind, f one rocket air 5'10 x 29 (inflatable 125 lts) is it too small or better 6'6? no option to adjust foil fanatic sky air premium 5,10 x 28.5 (inflatable 140 lts) oval shape for light wind? worth hard board price tag? the only one with foot strap option and foil adjustment for inflatable f one rocket v2 6'0 30 (hard board 120 lts) huge and expensive, will this be my final board or smaller later? no foot straps option will a hard board make huge difference for takeoff in light wind? will a more rectangular shape will help panning in order get on foil faster? Ultimately I like to buy whatever gets me more time in the water in light wind considering my weight! thanks so much, have a good day!
Hi Michael, getting out in less wind is mostly down to pumping technique. Once you have that, then your own strength to weight ratio is a big factor as this further improves your pumping. That will improve as you wing more. Next most important is your front wing size (2200 Is good for light wind if you're around 85kg). Next most important is the stiffness of the hand wing, older wings tend to bend when pumped aggressively meaning you're not getting the full benefit of pumping. A rigid 6m is better than a floppy 8m for pump take offs. Having a board with enough volume that you can stand on it in a few knots will really help - then you can get ready for the gust that helps you take off. The shape and constriction of the board helps, but is less important than the foil and pumping ability. You want a fairly low rocker with a squared off tail. Some inflatable boards are flexible to the point that your pumping is less effective, but I've heard the best inflatables that can be pumped with more pressure and with reinforced plates are close to the solid boards. Generally you want to go for solid boards unless you really need to roll up the board for transport.

I’m a middle aged surfer in Maui with 4 wing foiling sessions under my belt so far. I grew up here and can’t stand the crowded surf lineups any more. Needless to say people around here are killing it out in the water winging like crazy. There is NEVER a lack of wind and always side on shore. I’ve been consuming all the YouTube content I can find and this channel is by far, without a doubt, the absolutely most thorough and understandable material available. I can’t imagine you doing a better job. Seriously, hats off to you and thank you so much !!!
I’m going through the same withdrawal process from surfing. Tired of being part of the lower intertidal zone fighting for scraps

I don't know what I can add that hasn't already been said, but this has been the best tutorial. The repetition and graphics are excellent! I was imagining the oval pumping motion much rounder, so that's been helpful to see, the descriptions of upward and forward acceleration really helped to hone the concepts. Thanks so much! Going to look for your tips how to ride on foil now..
Thanks Lynne. I hope these video help you and please feel free to let me know any questions that crop up. All the best, Alex.

Another excellent tutorial! The only thing I would have added in the narrative is that the front to back foot weight shifting can be pretty subtle and it still works well. Like one friend said to me, "think about jumping up and down more than rocking forward and back. The forward and back shifting almost happens automatically when you use the correct oval pump and full body extension you describe so well. At the most, I think about stomping the back foot harder when reaching up. I admit this is a minor point, but when teaching in person saying "oval pump and jump up and down!" is simpler than explaining everything! I love that you show practicing the wing handling on shore. I believe people spend too little time on shore when learning new things, thinking that shore time is only for rank beginners. In fact spending too little shore time to perfect your wing handling is how to get stuck in beginning phases of learning!

Brilliant explanation!
Thanks Simon
