Flat Water Pop Up Drills

Foil › Fahrtechnik

These drills are designed to help you pop on on foil in flat water. The same technique can be used for catching waves and popping up for downwind runs. I'm using a 6'1"x 23" x 105L Kalama Performance Board with a Go Foil 280 front wing, Go Foil 14" fixed tail wing on a 26.5" mast. I weigh 160lbs / 72kg

How do you stop the board from turning in one direction whilst paddling?

  2. jurgendorn5249

Why does nobody on YT show how to stand up. I would need drills for that balance before I can start with paddling.

  3. Robin-wo8gj

It looks sooo easy when you do it. Thanks for the tips. I got better gear so no excuses !

  4. MicBergsma

Can you turn subtitles on please… I am deaf 😅 watching from Kihei

Are these bigger boards still good for pumping, stealing wake, etc? Just starting to learn about foiling and this seems like the best of both worlds being able to start from flat water with just a paddle. I know wing size and style matters a lot. This would make paddle boarding much more fun :P

    1. gleiten.tv

      Absolutely!

  6. Eidenbites

    What board is that ?

What extra length of paddle do you put on your height?

    1. gleiten.tv

My paddle is 3 inches above my head

  11. ctuna2011

  15. FoilWays

This is great. How long is the paddle in relation to your height? I've been surfing SUP for a long time, but with a longer paddle... about 6" above my height. I hear all you guys are running shorter paddles now.

    1. gleiten.tv

Yeah my paddle is 3 inches above my head now

    2. FoilWays

@PaddleWithRiggs Ah cool. That's actually slightly longer than what I've been hearing other guys using. All I've heard so far is anywhere from head-high to an inch under your height. I might try to get a hold of an adjustable paddle before I go cut my nice Kialoa... But I think that if I go from my current 6" over my head to 3", I'll like it regardless... it's not that huge of a difference as going head-high.

Greetings! I am 41 years old, weight 85 kg, height 174 cm.. I have 3 years of experience with a paddle and wine, but no experience with hydrofoil. I want to do downwind on the river with a paddle in flat and downwind especially. I'm afraid to make a choice, I'm especially worried about the width of the board, so that it won't be too difficult if it's narrow for me. Therefore, I am not considering the 8'×19' 5 option yet, is it really so difficult for a beginner to stand on a long and narrow board? And therefore it is worth choosing on Kalama E3 6'5×23'5' 116 liters. Will this be enough for a beginner's stability? Or there is a Kalama 6'5×27'5 , 130 liters.? What is your opinion? The main goal is downwind on the river.

    1. gleiten.tv

Hi @wingfoil, I recommend going longer and narrower. It’s so much easier to learn on a longer board. The 8’ x 21.5” x 111 liters Kalama Barracuda or something similar should work well for you. It might take some practice to get used to balancing but if you use a big foil it will add a lot of stability. Ideally you might want something closer to 115-120 liters for your weight while you learn. Just avoid boards with a round bottom. Round bottom hulls are not beginner friendly.

@PaddleWithRiggs Thank you very much! 👍

Hello again Jeremy This video is a real gem! I think I have watched it more than 50 times and I am still coming back to it. I got a KT Ginxu 105L a month ago and have been out 5-6 times practicing . I don’t have the explosive power to get up yet but have been focusing on the back leg/knee action to feel the pop and definitely making progress. I am 145 lbs and using the 1150 Axis front wing and also tried my friend’s 1310 Axis front wing but actually prefer felt better with the 1150. Should I just stick to the 1150 or still consider bigger front wings like the GT2600? And I am still not entirely sure what you meant by the paddle stroke being twice as fast as recovery 🙏

  21. kitesitenet

Really great video and break down of the skill.

  22. meshmellow

The most useful tutorial out there 🫡🏴‍☠️🤙

  23. kitesailor1

Thanks so much for the comprehensive breakdown of the paddle up sequence

  24. justinlovell

Would my dakine (cabrinha) 1300 or 1950 be a good choice?

    1. gleiten.tv

It’s usually easier to learn with the bigger foil. Sorry but I’ve not tried the Cabrinha foils

  25. tonogutierrez1888

Hi Jereny, could you tell me which paddle you use?

  26. foilnautics808

Great tutorial got me stoked now gonna go practice. I don’t have a front foil big enough right now but probably good so I focus on fundamentals 😂

  27. jimknopf9958

Great explanation! Best tutorial what I have seen so far. Thank you Jeremy

  28. 黄晓明-l4w

Hi Jeremy can u tell me there? i want try

  29. 黄晓明-l4w

Hello can u tell me ur board 120L 5'?

  30. ptj6412

Hi Jeremy, thanks for sharing your knowledge and stoke!! I've been SUPing for over 13 years in surf and downwind and I probably have always used a paddle much too long. Now that I'm trying to get the hang of SUP foiling, I've shortened my paddle a few inches but trying to figure out how you pros determine your paddle length. What is your advice on paddle size and length for better SUP foiling? Maybe you could tell us where your in relation to your height? thanks again for sharing...I never miss a video!!

    1. gleiten.tv

I prefer my paddle to be 4” above my head. Some guys go shorter and some go longer. I feel like I get a nice catch at the length I’m using and if I go shorter I have to squat lower to get that same catch.

  32. olofstraatman6655

Super video . What kind of board do you recommend for a starter 1,92 and 96kg

  33. michaelkihn1305

Hi Jeremy! Great video! I gave it the first try yesterday, - no chance 😅. I suppose the gear plays a big role? My board is wider and shorter than yours, I guess that doesn't help but anyways too early to give up! 😂 Maybe you could help me with the following two questions: I am using my foils from dockpumping and have a slower/more stable serup and a faster/less stable serup: Which one do you recommend? 2. After trying out what difference it makes to locate is in the back/center/front of the rail tracks, disn't really come to any conclusion.. Maybe difficult to give advice in terms of that since many parameters play into finding the perfect position of the foil.. but could you figure out what the differences are if putting the foil more in front or back on YOUR setup?

    1. gleiten.tv

Yes the board makes a huge difference. Long and skinny is much easier. I’ve found it easier to pop up on most foils when the are all the way forward in the box. The slower, bigger foil with greater low end lift is the way to go

Nice teaching! Thank you so much.

  36. santiagomorgan5071

With the shorter board how do you track straight? I tend to just spin.

  37. jamescarter3883

One of the best, to the point, cleanly presented videos I have seen!! Well Done! Thanks for sharing Jeremy !

      Thanks James!

@PaddleWithRiggs Hi Jeremy! I binge on your vids trying to learn every thing I can but have only plaining boards. I'm attempting to purchase a displacement D-W-SUP-FOIL board, but they are not available. (Yet) D.Kalama asked me in a response, if I wanted him to build me a custom board. I said yes, but don't know what he or you would recomend. I haven't heard back for a few days. (Must be good swell over there!!! Haha!) I need some help deciding what DwnWnd-BOARD to purchase for my weight and would like your opinion. I see you occasionally ride a custom Kalama Barracuda perhaps. (?) I'm 185-190Lbs 65 years old and am 1 year into foiling on Armstrong equipment. In San Diego mostly light winds but see occasional swell here on west coast and would like to prepare or train for DW SUP foiling. What board would you recommend for a heavier man than you. I see the E3 6'-1" 23"W that you demonstrated. Would the next size up be better or not? In your opinion. (If I could get my paws on one!) Q#2 would a custom board be a better option from Kalama, do you have a favorite Down wind board from Kalama that you love and recomend. Sorry for leaning on you like this but you are IMO among the top knowlege and experience in this realm and I would be a fool to not ask. Ride Well & Aloha! from Insane Diego. Jimbo C.

    3. gleiten.tv

@jamescarter3883 Jimbo, I’m sorry I missed this message. Did you get a board? I definitely recommend a custom Kalama if you are still looking

    4. jamescarter3883

      @PaddleWithRiggs Yes. I got a Barracuda..

  38. sabinev5928

It was nice meeting you and joining your “community work”. I got the Kalama board (6’1), what mast length and foil (I am a complete beginner) would you use to learn this? My goal is downwind on lakes. (I live at a lake 😳). What would work there? BR Gaby

    1. gleiten.tv

Hi Gaby, Nice meeting you too. I recommend a 26.5” mast. GT2200 Gofoil front wing and the 20” long fixed tail wing

  39. 1JOHNHEARN

making the impossible look waaaaaaay too easy. mastery

  40. Davidfoiler

So good mate. I will be using this for practice drills as soon as I get my DW board. Thanks for taking the time to share this, it helps me see that it's possible with the correct technique. I have 28' mast and 32 and have heard the shorter the better for practice as it helps you get up quick and has less drage, woudl you agree with this? .

    1. gleiten.tv

Yes a shorter mast makes easier to get lifted

    2. Davidfoiler

@PaddleWithRiggs Thanks heaps, I will let you know how it goes. I did send a few other questions on your other video, which I hope is okay. Thanks again and love your froth and training vids.

  41. eyke7225

Hi Jeremy. RESPECT and a very good tutorial. 😀🤙

  42. rockdean1

    So cool

  43. Samsplayground

Awesome, thanks for the drills. Will keep at it.

  44. bernhardwachter9681

Hello, thanks for the awesome video. I struggle with holding a straight line of the board. Could you explain your paddle-technique? That would be very kind Bernhard, Austria

  45. arnaudnaiwko

I'm dreaming about doing that, I love dock starting and would like to pump everywhere without the need of a dock. Could you give more informations about the paddle, you said in a comment it is 4 inches above your head but what about the blade size and shape ?

    1. gleiten.tv

I use a Quickblade Ono Ava 105 paddle. If flat water is the main goal then consider 2" over head for the length

  46. corn22bread

Hola Jeremy These are fantastic tutorials. My kit Go Foil 80 cm mast, FTL 14.5 and RS 1150. Kalama E3 5'6, 112L. I weight 150 lbs. Proficient in Winging, SUP surfing and just getting immersed in SUP foiling. What is the optimal mast position on the Kalama board? More forward or back. Not getting the lift. Probably, a combination of my technique. Mahalo Cornelio

    1. gleiten.tv

I find it easier to get lifted in flat water with the mast forward but that’s a small wing for flat water. For downwind I prefer the mast to be in the middle of the box

  47. Steven-rw8zr

I'll have to practice this a bunch this summer, I wonder if it is possible for me though. 6'3 190lbs on a axis 1150 and fanatic 95L skywing. I wonder if I would need to slim right down to 170ish or if I could do it at a heavier weight of 190... Have you seen heavier guys have success on with this in flat?

    1. gleiten.tv

I have seen heavier guys have success on the GoFoil 280 and the GoFoil 2200

  48. lylecarlsonsurfboard

    Yes. Brother ❤️

  49. chuongfoil

awesome and i'm working hard every day

  50. robertho1770

Hello Jeremy Amazing technique and great tutorial. What board are you using ?

    1. gleiten.tv

      I'm on the 6'1 x 23" Kalama E3 production board 105 liters
